Two Different Types of Management Styles - Ground vs Cloud Management - KingFisher Airlines CEO Dr. Vijay Mallya and Japan Airlines CEO Haruka Nishimatsu

Posted by Varun | Labels: | Posted On Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 11:42 PM

Management Styles -  Ground vs Cloud Management

I will share two entirely different kinds of CEO's approach when in crisis. KingFisher Airlines CEO Dr. Vijay Mallya and Japan Airlines CEO Haruka Nishimatsu

Today, Kingfisher airlines is cash strapped and its primary financial problem is due to the crippling interest on $1.3bn long-term debt, and it urgently needs fresh working capital.Vijay Mallya has blamed the government policy of forcing airlines to fly some loss-making routes as the cause of the financial crisis at his Kingfisher Airlines and also requested the Govt for a bailout. That, of course, is not the only reason why the airline is in bad shape and Mallya surely knows that. It is incumbent on all airlines to fly on some less profitable routes and there is no evidence to suggest Kingfisher has had to bear a disproportionate share of the burden.

What explains Kingfisher’s plight – $1.2 billion debt and accumulated losses of nearly $1 billion?

Mallya’s erratic management style which i term as Cloud Management and poor desinged strategic plans for the airlines are the primary reasons for the downfall of Kingfisher. The below video shows the luxurious and the fabulous lifestyle of Dr. Mallya. This will give you an indication as to where all the money is going  ;)

Kingfisher has dug its own hole through bad strategy and poor understanding of the aviation business and the business environment. Kingfisher should receive no bailout with taxpayer money. It should, of course, be allowed to dig itself out of that hole or simply die.

On the other hand, Mr.Haruka Nishimatsu of Japan Airlines who showed through genunine ground management style when his airlines was on the verge of bankruptcy in 2010.

Here are some of the guidelines followed by the CEO Haruka Nishimatsu .

1.He knocked down all the walls to his office to allow his workers to feel as though they can approach him at any time and that they are on the same level.
2.Takes the city bus to work everyday
3.Buys his clothes from discount stores saying a boss who wears Armani puts himself at arm’s length from his people.
4. Regularly pops onto planes to meet flight attendants and take part in duties such as sorting newspapers and preparing for meals so he can stay in touch with the front lines.
5. When he was forced to cut salaries, he cut his own to a mere $90,000, which considering he runs the 10th largest airline in the world looks like minimum wage compared to his industry counterparts.

From an HR prespective, Nishimatsu provides a great example of someone who will not only run a company, but motivate employees to take the initiative giving them a feeling of job ownership.  Put in the context of the economic meltdown, the majority of these steps should be a no brainer, something Vijay Mallya and others need to take a long hard look at.

Everynow and then something happens and I get surrounded by a deep sinking negative feeling.
This dejected feeling is clearly not conducive to high levels of performance. Our feelings largely
control how well we utilize our physical and mental resources. Our feelings can literally make or break us. To keep my level of motivation perpetually high, I always watch the below video and  invariably feel very optimistic and focused. Thought of sharing it with you all.

Stay focused and Stay Inspired!

Do We have enough reasons to Celebrate India 's 61st Republic Day!??

Posted by Varun | Labels: | Posted On Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 9:28 AM

Warm Greeting Friends!

Yesterday was a proud day for every Indian! 60 years of glorious democracy and still

going strong! From morning i was glued to Television to see the Republic Parade at

Rajpat , New Delhi. It was a spectacular display of India 's rich cultural and varied

heritage! BSF Bike Riders were simply awesome! Can you imagine 189 ppl on 34 bikes

But then as the day was nearing its end , a silly question haunted my mind for the

rest of the day, Do we really have any reasons to celebrate our Republic Day???

After 60 plus years of democracy, Where do we really stand as of today??

We can express our unwavering and unflinching love for our country! We can

change our Facebook Profile pic with India 's Flag! We can even have status updates

in almost all social media sites. But does that really change the ground reality? I

guess the answer would be a big NO. We are still considered as a developing

country! Here are few of the statistics which will give a real picture of how much

are we in Water :

1 . India 's Per Capita Income is $400 which places it 162nd out of 206 countries in

the World Development Report for 2000-2001.

2. Half the Indian People are poor by International poverty line of one dollar

person per day and a third of world 's poor are in India.

3. An Indian's life expectancy is 63 years lower than that in many poor countries. As

many as 65 out of a thousand infants die: Two-Thirds of the children suffer from

malnutrition and are under-weight. 71% cannot access sanitation. Four out of Ten

Indians are iil-literate.Therefore India is ranked 134th out of 174 countries on the

United Nations Development Program 's HR Index.

I am dismayed and disappointed by this ! We as individuals and thoughtful citizen of

this country should take a step forward and help India to take a giant leap towards

next Chapter! We cannot sit ideal and just continue to be in Love with our Outer

Image! We need to develop and make our selves mature and strong from Inside!

I wish When I celebrate India 75 th Republic Day! I would look back at this article

and would have hundred reasons to prove it wrong!

With High Hopes and Passion to Make A difference! I am signing Off here!

I shall catch you later!

Till then Stay Tuned!

My Leadership Thoughts!

Posted by Varun | Labels: | Posted On Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 10:09 PM

My Leadership Thoughts!

Of Late I have been very active in reading books on Leadership and decision making!

There are so many different definitions which i can find when I google on LEADERSHIP. But the

most simplest yet most elegant of Leadership would be "POSITIVE INFLUENCE". The amount of

positive influence which your leader exerts on you determines his leadership quotient! On my

professional front, I have been denied quality leadership now for a long time! All this time when i

was truly longing for a mentor/leader who could guide and motivate me, Something that constant

pricked me from inside to become a genunine leader. My non-profitable initative "PUNYA" is a

platform for me to experiment with my beliefs and ideas! It is so wisely said

that you don't need a title to be a leader. My confidence is growing and thanks to All-Mighty who is

giving different opportunites in various forms to serve ppl.

Genunine Leadership is not conferred by the title or limited to the executive suite. Rather it is shown

through our everyday actions and the way we influence the lives of those around us. Some of the

characteristics which genunine untitled leaders share are as follows:

1. Acting with purpose rather than getting bogged down by mindless activity

2. Caring about and listening to others

3. They always are on to find ways to encourage the contributions and development of others rather

than focusing solely on personal achievements.

4. Genunine Leaders get others to follow them out of respect and commitment rather than fear and

compliance.

5. They lead through their relationships with people,as opposed to their control over people.

6. Leaders generally collaborate rather than control.

If you aspire to lead in what you do, following this simple receipe would help you for surely

1. Take control of your life.

2. Never fail to try, It's ok if you try and fail.

3. seize new opportunites

4. influence others to be their best

5. contribute to the betterment of others.

This are my personal thoughts! You are most welcome to respond with your feedback on this

article! Thanks everyone for your unflinching and unwavering support for Punya ! Wish you all a very

Happy Pongal / Makar Sakranthi / Baisakthi / Lohri :)

AVATAR EFFECT

Posted by Varun | Labels: | Posted On Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 9:47 PM

GM Folks, Yesterday I saw AVATAR, A spell binding Cinema! While returning from the theatre around 10.30 pm, just around the Signal at MOUNT ROAD (Opp.BATA Showroom ), a 80 plus year old lady was begging on road. She was sitting almost 1/4 IN in the road with traffic at its peak. I saw her and as signal turned green i drove off. Just few kilometers away b4 reaching home, something urged me from inside. I dont know what . I took a U-Turn and reached the same place where the old lady was sitting. I parked my vehicle and looked out for some Food OUTLET where i can get her something to eat. Unfortunately, all the good food outlets at that place (VASANTHA BHVAN and INSUVAI ) were almost closed. I walked and searched for 10-15 minutes. Finally I found a road side vendor from whom I bought 4 IDLYS. I came back running and offered that lady that food and 1 AQUA FINA Water Botte. I requested her to come on the FOOTPATH as it is dangerous to sit so close to heavy moving Traffic. This is what the OLD LADY REPLIED " If i don't sit here, no one will bother to care about me and my plight. I will collect all this food and give it to my grandson ". In the mid of the road, that old lady touched my feet to thank me.. A small tear of happiness rolled down my cheek. I returned back home with a sense of partial satisfaction . And all this was due to constant motivation from priya who witnessed this incident.
